Dr Jan Eckert is a Swiss urbanist, researcher and lifelong learning expert reimagining human-planetary relationships.
He is the initiator of Nominute.City and the project’s owner and Principal Investigator.
He is also the author of the Space-Place-Identity Framework, which he started developing in 2006.
Research Partners

The Swiss-based platform Hortopia is a founding partner of the nominute.city project. hortopia.org gathers content, projects and initiatives that help to prototype and build better human-planetary relationships.
Bridge To
Bridge To is a space for practitioners and researchers in architecture, urbanism, design, art and beyond. Bridge To will host a residency for Nominute.City in the unique Sakyo-ku district of Kyoto.
Generative Center
Located in Besso, Lugano, the Generative Center is a pioneer in artificial intelligence research and development. The Centre is currently producing “Echo of Legends”, an audiovisual series that brings Swiss legends and myths to life through entirely AI-generated artistry. Together we’ll dive into the urban layer of legends connected to the urban environment of Lugano and other Swiss cities.

Kultur einer Digitalstadt is an interdisciplinary initiative exploring the intersection of culture and digital transformation in Darmstadt, Germany. With a specific notion of the cultural and digital layer of sociolo-urban systems, Nominute.City will explore how urban community cultures can be amplified through digital technologies, such as the research’s citizen science approach.

Farm Cultural Park
Farm Cultural Park has been pioneering regenerative urbanism projects in Sicily and globally since 2010. Their initiatives demonstrate how cultural practices can transform urban spaces through collective care. Their latest project in Palermo will serve as both a case study for Nominute.City and a testing ground for the research’s emerging findings.

for Cities
Based in Tokyo, Kyoto and Amsterdam, for Cities is an urban experience design studio that sees cities as works of art, created by our own hands. for Cities seeks to celebrate the rich but often overlooked urban knowledge and stories rooted in Asian cities. Their mission is to build an international collective of emerging urbanists who act together to challenge existing paradigms rather than follow western models of urbanism.
Isola Catania
In the heart of Catania, Isola’s innovative South Working approach reimagines contemporary work. The centre integrates education, entrepreneurship and cultural practices to create an environment where different temporal needs – from learning to working – can coexist harmoniously.

Postgrowth Cities Coalition
The coalition is an international network of researchers and practitioners committed to urban degrowth. Together we are creating knowledge and practices that reduce the impact of cities on the planet while improving their quality of life for all. The Coalition seeks to reduce, slow down and close urban metabolisms in a just and democratic way, while fostering urban equity and ecological regeneration.
Traveling Circus of Urbanism
The Traveling Circus of Urbanism is a platform for urban narratives gathered from around the world through travel and dialogue with citizens of the world, proposing a simple but controversial concept – namely the need for more global perspectives in the study of cities, and for urban storytelling to side with the underrepresented.

Nominute.City will begin accepting institutional partnerships in 2025.
As part of our 100% research policy, we maximise the allocation of research funds by limiting institutional partners’ overheads, ensuring that the majority of funds directly support research activities.
